When diluted with water (distilled or rain water is best) it will soften the outer coating of many types of seeds to decrease the germinating time and increase the total amount of seeds that will germinate. Most tropical seeds have tough seed coats that usually have to pass through an animals digestive system or several years of exposure to the elements to break their dormancy. The salt-like substance should be handled with care, as it can irritate the skin and is toxic in large doses. Different seeds will need different amounts of time in the solution.
